Emerging Roles in HIM: Analytics and Informatics

As the healthcare environment continues to transform and become more data driven, health information departments need to position themselves to remain relevant. This presentation will share one organization’s journey through this transformation, and discuss some of the emerging roles that can position HIM departments for the future.
Shawn Wells, RHIT, CHDA
Shawn Wells, RHIT, CHDA, is HIM Data Integrity Manager for University of Utah Health Care (UUHC), responsible for Inpatient Auditing, coder education, and Data Analytics. He was the ICD-10 Coordinator for UUHC and led several key areas of the transition including clinical documentation improvement, training and education, code mapping, dual coding, payer testing, and implementation of computer-assisted-coding. He has 14 years of experience in HIM in a variety of settings, including skilled nursing facilities, acute care hospitals, and academic medical centers. He is an AHIMA-approved ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS trainer.
Mr. Wells has spoken on the topics of ICD-10, computer-assisted coding, and data integrity at the regional, national, and international level. He has served as President of the Utah Health Information Management Association (UHIMA), and is currently the Co-Chair of AHIMA’s Data Analytics and Informatics Practice Council. He has an Associates of Applied Science in Health Information Technology from Weber State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Montana State University.
