The GHIMA Student Advisory Council (SAC) is the group that powers the GHIMA Student Connection and provides programming to reach out to HIM students across the state. The SAC consists of students from each university and college with an HIM program and campus within Georgia. The SAC plans and implements several major functions every year. These functions are:
Student Academy – This annual one-day event offers sessions preparing candidates for the RHIT/RHIA certification examination, helpful hints for that first job in HIM, interviewing skills, and resume writing. Attendees also are informed about the various AHIMA career and student resources available to all student members as well as the benefits that come from networking with fellow professionals.
Career Fair – This annual one-day event brings potential employers looking for recent graduates and experienced professionals to fill open positions in the HIM industry.
Scholarship Program – GHIMA offers scholarships to students enrolled in CAHIIM accredited associate, baccalaureate and/or master’s HIM programs in Georgia.
Opportunities to Meet Other Students in Georgia – SAC will conduct at least three meetings throughout different parts of the state to give students the opportunity to meet future HIM professionals and to learn more about future leadership opportunities while in school and after graduation with GHIMA.
Purpose of GHIMA SAC
The purpose of the GHIMA SAC is to facilitate communication to the HIM student body and give GHIMA feedback regarding HIM student concerns or issues that need to be addressed. By doing so, GHIMA hopes to develop a pipeline of students interested in participating in AHIMA on the national, state and regional levels. This will in turn build leadership skills in these students.
After the SAC representatives are chosen from each participating school, GHIMA encourages those representatives to start or expand an HIM club at their school to facilitate discussion of important topics pertinent to HIM, share club activities in Student Connection, and network with future HIM colleagues.
Goals for GHIMA SAC
- To support an active HIM club at each college and university with an HIM program in Georgia.
- To encourage students to join their regional GHIMA groups—North Georgia, West Georgia, and East Georgia—thereby increasing student membership for each region by 25% by 6/30/2017.
The Student Academy is held yearly at various schools around the state. This is a very popular event for students as pertinent information is shared in a fun, engaging format. The sessions include:
- RHIT/RHIA certification examination preparation.
- Job search methods.
- Interviewing skills, including role playing with participants.
- Resume writing.
- AHIMA and GHIMA resources for students and new graduates.
- Networking and how it contributes to landing that first job in HIM.
After attending the 2016 Student Academy, the students wrote rave reviews about their experience. Students from the HIM Club at Atlanta Technical College wrote in their newsletter:
“It was a great meeting and we had a lot of fun and fellowship. The tips presented were awesome and will definitely help me when I am studying for the RHIT and looking for a job,” said Nyrshea Williams. “I just wish more people could have come to hear this information.”
The Career Fair represents the biggest SAC project because the students volunteer their time and effort to make this annual event a productive day for soon-to-be graduates and new graduates. Potential employers from Georgia attend this annual spring event in the hopes of filling positions for interns, paid apprenticeships, part-time and full-time employment in HIM.
Some employers who have participated in the past have included Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Piedmont Hospital, Wellstar Health System, Emory Healthcare, St. Mary’s Healthcare, Phoebe Putney Health System, Herzing University, and Western Governors University.
By awarding scholarships, the Georgia Health Information Management Association continues to support and recognize Georgia students pursuing education in Health Information Management and Health Informatics. GHIMA offers academic scholarships for students enrolled in a CAHIIM accredited associate, baccalaureate and master’s degree programs. Interested candidates may find more information about eligibility requirements and application instructions by clicking here.
GHIMA SAC will be actively soliciting donations from healthcare corporations and educational institutions. If you or your organization is interested in donating, please view the GHIMA Student Merit Scholarship Fund webpage.
The SAC representatives and HIM students meet face-to-face three to four times a year to hear students’ concerns and questions about their chosen career in HIM. Topics include SAC projects, GHIMA resources for professional growth, and pertinent educational seminars. There will be at least one meeting in each of the three GHIMA regions: North, East and West. A virtual webinar will be offered to those students who cannot attend in person.
