The Georgia Privacy Webinar Series is designed to answer Georgia specific questions related to most recent OCR notices, breach reporting and breach analysis. In her role as Vice President of Privacy, Compliance and HIM Policy for MRO, Bowen serves as the company’s Privacy and Compliance Officer (PCO), oversees the company’s compliance with HIPAA, and ensures new and existing client HIM policies and procedures are to code. She has more than 40 years of experience in Health Information Management (HIM), holding a variety of HIM director and consulting roles. Prior to joining MRO, she was Senior Vice President and Privacy Officer for HealthPort, Inc., now known as CIOX Health. Bowen is an active member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), having served as its President and Board Chair, as a member of the Board of Directors, and of the Council on Certification. Additionally, Bowen was chair for the AHIMA Foundation. She has been honored with AHIMA’s Triumph Award in the mentor category; she is also the recipient of the Distinguished Member Award from the Tennessee Health Information Management Association (THIMA). Bowen is an established author and speaker on HIM topics and has taught HIM studies at Chattanooga State and the University of Tennessee Memphis. Bowen holds a Bachelor of Medical Science degree with a focus in medical record administration and a Master’s degree in Health Information/ Informatics Management Technology.
OCR Audit Updates and Patient Access Regulations (1.5 CEUs – Privacy and Security) – Available Now
This session will provide OCR updates regarding focus for audits, outcomes of resolution agreements and building best practices around those items. The session will also provide patient access directions and details regarding patient directed requests, which are anticipated to continue as patient-centered healthcare initiatives are underway. Such initiatives enable patients/families to take more responsibility for their healthcare and require patients to access, utilize and share their health information.
GA State Laws on Breach Reporting & SAMHSA Update (1 CEU – Privacy and Security) – Available Now
Georgia recognizes all four, common law invasion of privacy claims: intrusion upon solitude or seclusion, public disclosure of private facts, false-light privacy, and appropriation of one’s name or likeness. This session will review how the state rules work in combination and to enhance HIPAA regulations. Attendees will gain enhanced knowledge regarding documentation requirements to achieve compliance. State laws strive to strike a balance between the need to share information for the public good with a respect for the privacy of information on individuals.
During this session, attendees will additionally receive a refresher regarding the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and an update pertaining to the 2017 changes to Confidentiality of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Patient Records regulations, (42 CFR Part 2) to facilitate health integration and information exchange within new health care models while continuing to protect the privacy and confidentiality of patients seeking treatment for substance use disorders.
Breach Analysis and Reporting (1 CEU – Privacy and Security) Available February 15, 2018
This session will detail the breach analysis processes and review required reporting of the said event. Specific walk-through examples will be demonstrated to provide the attendees opportunities to improve their understanding of the requirements. Specifics regarding to whom to report the breach, and required timelines, will be included in this session.
